Creating Water from Air for the Children of Bayadha with the Orange Foundation, Tunisia

Orange turned to Kumulus’ air-to-water generators to provide high-quality drinking water access to the students of a remote Tunisian village. The collaboration brought off-grid water access to the school, while relieving a daily burden on the families of the children.

“Having water available directly on site means that residents no longer need to travel miles from the village to fetch water. What's more, the daily production of 20 to 30 liters of water allows us to avoid up to 500 kg of plastic per year, and up to 2 tons of CO₂ emissions.”

Ensuring access to drinking water at schools is ensuring access to education — a core pillar of the Orange Foundation, the strategic CSR initiative of the telecom company.

The foundation is actively involved in providing this access for disadvantaged groups worldwide, particularly for vulnerable women and children in African and Middle Eastern regions with limited resources.

One such project run by the foundation in Tunisia is the support program for the village of Bayadha, located in the northwestern region of the country, close to the Algerian border.

“The village of Bayadha is a very isolated area with very limited access to drinking water,” says Maya Jerbi, President of Orange Foundation Tunisia. Residents would have to walk for miles to reach drinking water sources. The limited water access was also responsible for lower school attendance, according to the school staff.

The foundation had already renovated a large part of the school and built a health centre in the area. The next step was clear: to ensure a source of clean, high-quality drinking water for not just the children, but their family too.

“Kumulus appeared to be a concrete solution in the local context, particularly because it does not require heavy infrastructure or complex logistics.”

As part of its CSR initiative “Project Mkètebna”, Kumulus is committed to providing clean drinking water to schools in Tunisia that have little to no access to clean drinking water.

“We saw the solution come into being, supported it, and watched it evolve rapidly,” says Maya. “And then we adopted it. Today, we are witnessing its real impact, both socially and environmentally.”

Mineralized water from air, delivered seamlessly

"The tech support was seamless. Kumulus solutions were installed in close collaboration with the tech team (...) water quality analyses were shared, and an awareness campaign was conducted in the school to reassure parents and teachers.”

Once the collaboration was confirmed, Kumulus sprang into action. With support from Orange Foundation, Kumulus installed 3 of its air water generators (Amphores) at the school grounds. The solutions now serve hundreds of schoolchildren as well as staff members, providing them with fresh, mineralized drinking water every day.

  • Machines installed: 3 Kumulus Amphores
  • Water quality checks: 1 every six months

“The need was very real. What convinced us to adopt Kumulus was the rapid and impressive progress of the startup, driven by a competent and determined team,” says Maya. “It quickly reassured us of the robustness of the solution.”

After various tests assured the high-quality of the dispensed water, the Kumulus team made sure that teachers and parents alike were made aware of the same. In order to build greater trust, the team was on-ground with the school staff to explain the working of the air to water generators, share test analyses, and to answer any questions or doubts.

Bringing about real change: more water refreshment, less plastic waste

“The changes are visible in terms of costs and the environment, since we no longer buy plastic bottles.”

The impact was felt almost immediately. Over the course of 7 months, the solutions produced an average of 20-30 litres of water from air per day, which helped reduce 3,243 kg of plastic waste generated from PET bottles. At the same time, the residents no longer need to walk miles to access clean water. The solutions ensured that it wasn’t just the children who benefited from the project, but the wider community as well.

Impact:

  • Average daily water produced: 20-30 litres
  • Plastic avoided: 3,243 kg
  • CO₂ emissions avoided: 1,027 kg
  • 0 km to walk for water
  • 0 trucks to deliver water

Delivering high-quality drinking water, sustainably

In Bayadha, Kumulus’ air water generators established local production, replacing waste-producing logistics with dependable, quality water access. Not only has school attendance improved since our solutions were installed, but the students regularly bring drinking water back home to their families. The partnership between Orange Foundation and Kumulus created real environmental gains, while providing a tangible daily benefit for students, staff, and families.

The project also helped us take a step forward towards one of our biggest company goals—ensuring water access in every Tunisian school.
