The ambitious 120 MW Kairouan solar power plant, developed by AMEA Power, is Tunisiaâs largest solar project, generating enough clean electricity for around 43,000 homes and strengthening the countryâs energy security. Amid this major renewable achievement, the project still faced a basic challenge: securing reliable, sustainable water access on its remote construction site.

One of the biggest challenges at the Kairouan construction site was the complete dependence on bottled water for drinking needs. Because the site is in a remote, off-grid environment, drinking water had to be transported over long distances, requiring careful planning, frequent deliveries, and constant monitoring of stock levels. If deliveries were delayed or miscalculated, workers could suddenly be left without water, creating serious health and safety risks.
In addition, the large number of plastic bottles used everyday created a heavy burden on waste management. Collecting, storing, and transporting empty bottles for proper processing requires extra time, labor, and organization. Despite strict plastic collection procedures, managing this waste was difficult and costly.
That is a significant contributing factor to why only a small fraction of all plastic produced is actually recycled. Globally, the number is only 9% , with most plastic ending up in landfills, incinerated, or polluting natural environments. In addition, the transportation of plastic bottled water also increases fuel consumption and operational expenses. In conclusion, it is a costly and unsustainable solution for long-term operations at a site aiming to maintain high water quality standards and environmental responsibility.

To address these challenges, AMEA partnered with Kumulus installing air water generators directly on the construction site. This location was especially demanding because the air is extremely dusty, due to constant construction activity and the surrounding desert environment.
Despite these harsh conditions, the Kumulus solution is designed with advanced filtration and mineralization. After ambient air is captured and condensed to produce water, the water goes through a multi-stage filtration system to ensure high quality. The filtered water is then mineralized to enhance the taste. The system operates reliably in off-grid locations and does not depend on water deliveries, making it ideal for remote sites.
It is also simple to use, which helped the team trust and adopt the solution quickly. By  creating water from air on site, Kumulus showcased that clean drinking water can be produced even in the most challenging environments.
The partnership between Kumulus Water and AMEA Power creates long-term value by changing how drinking water is supplied at remote energy project sites. Instead of relying on transported water, AMEA Power adopted anon-site, off-grid solution that allows water to be produced where it is needed. This approach reduces dependence on deliveries and gives the project team more control over water availability and water quality in challenging environments.
Kumulus solutions operate independently of municipal infrastructure and can run in off-grid settings using available energy sources, including solar power. Their modular and scalable design makes it easy toadjust water production as and when the needs of the project change. By replacing plastic bottled water, the solution helps reduce plastic waste and lower the environmental impact of long-term site operations.

This case study shows how water from air technology can successfully address drinking water challenges in remote and off-grid construction sites. At the Kairouan project in Tunisia, Kumulus enabled clean drinking water to be produced directly on site, even in dusty conditions and without access to traditional water infrastructure.
By improving water access for workers and reducing reliance on plastic bottled water, the project supported both operational efficiency and sustainability goals. The successful collaboration between AMEA Power and Kumulus Water demonstrates how innovative, decentralized water solutions can be applied to similar projects in remote locations around the world.
